Leonard (Melchoir) Henny (4 August 1935 - 17 September 2011) was a Dutch filmmaker, teacher and writer, known for his socially engaged documentaries, and his pioneering work in the field of visual sociology.〔Emmison, Michael, et al. Sage, 2012.〕 == Biography == Henny completed his studies at the Dutch Film Academy in 1961, and obtained a degree in sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1963, and a degree in Urban planning and development at MIT in 1966. Henny lived and worked in Berlin, Cambridge, Mass, San Francisco, St. Louis, Missouri, Micronesia and Venezuela. He settled in the United States for a period of eight years and worked as a professor, lecturer and researcher at several American and Dutch universities, including at the SRI International in California, the Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Missouri, the University of Utrecht and the Wageningen University. In the 1960s and 1970s, he particular made documentary films focusing on social change, and he was editor of the ''International Journal of Visual Sociology.'' As a lecturer at the Sociology Institute of the University of Utrecht, he performed research on the influence of film on children. Also he conducted research on the use of film, photography and video in secondary education and he was the author of articles and monographs on audiovisual resources in anthropology and sociology. Several of his students founded in 1974, the Utrecht Film collective "Rode Lantaren".
